Before your mind wonders to thoughts of chocolate or beer, the new Belgium export I’m referring to comes in the form of high-quality street-style. Meaning “small things”, Komono is an accessory brand of primarily watches and sunglasses where signature bold prints and retro-meets-futuristic design leaves a lasting impact. In the five years that Belgians Anton Janssens and Raf Maes launched the brand, Komono has seen massive success. The line is carried in 45 different countries, and with its recent Vancouver launch celebrated at Cambie Street’s Walrus, Canada is now part of that list.
The most surprising thing about Komono (and perhaps the brand’s recipe for success) is its price-point. Most of their accessories range from $70-90, which considering Komono’s design, quality and impressive packaging, creates many looks of shock mixed with glee from customers, or as the designers like to call them, “Komonists”.
Komono’s Spring 2014 collection solidifies the brand’s aesthetic, while incorporating key trends. There are gold or silver-faced watches with straps in floral or cheeky insect prints, and sunglasses in Pantone’s it-colour Radiant Orchid that will still make you feel a bit like Elton John in his heyday (thanks to some retro shaping). Every year Komono collaborates with a different artist, keeping each collection a bit different from the last. I smell collector items!
