If you have recently purchased birth control from Shoppers Drug Mart, you may need to worry.

The drug store chain has issued a statement regarding expired birth control medication that was sold in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba between March 16 and April 1.

Women who picked up prescriptions for birth control Alesse-21 with lot number G73720 and listed expiry date of September 2014 are asked to call their pharmacy if they have not already been contacted.

“We deeply regret this occurrence and apologize unreservedly to all those affected,” Shoppers Drug Mart said in a statement. The retailer has admitted to human error at their distribution centre in Calgary that caused an incorrect data entry to the inventory system.

While ingesting expired birth control is harmless, its effectiveness in preventing pregnancies may be compromised.

Shoppers Drug Mart has since launched a review of its internal protocols to determine how to prevent errors of this kind in future.
