Evander Kane has already unfollowed the Canucks on Instagram

Evander Kane is technically still a member of the Vancouver Canucks.

But his time representing the team has come to an end.

The Canucks are the only team that is allowed to negotiate a new contract with the 34-year-old pending unrestricted free agent before July 1. But given the team is rebuilding and trying to establish a new culture, they probably don’t have much interest in bringing the Vancouver native back.

Kane’s likely aware of this fact, judging by his recent activity on Instagram.

Kane has unfollowed his hometown team on Instagram, which seemed to invite numerous Canucks fans to roast him.

“BEST THING HE’S EVER DONE FOR US,” said one Canucks fan on X.

“WE’RE FINALLY FREE,” added another.

Needless to say, Kane’s lone season in Vancouver didn’t go well.

The trade to acquire him from the Edmonton Oilers was criticized heavily by the media and fans. While it only took a fourth-round pick to acquire him, he didn’t come close to providing value for his $5.125-million contract, scoring just 31 points (13-18-31) in 71 games with the Canucks.

Age and injuries didn’t help, and neither did the woeful team he was surrounded by. But Kane’s play on the ice did not look anything like what you’d expect from a top-six forward.

He played in Game No. 1,000 on the road in Las Vegas and appeared in the Canucks’ next home game, as the team honoured his achievement.

Then we never saw him again. Kane reportedly had his exit meeting early and was nowhere to be seen at the last game of the season, when even injured players presented jerseys to fans on the ice. He also didn’t attend the end-of-season media availability with his teammates.

We’ll see what the future holds for Kane. Will another team offer him a contract this summer, or will he need to prove himself on a pro tryout?
