80 properties on evacuation alert due to wildfire in Central Okanagan

Eighty properties are on evacuation alert in the Central Okanagan because of the Bear Creek fire. Fifty-four of those properties have houses or other buildings on them, said Central Okanagan Emergency Operations in a release.

Emergency crews monitored the blaze into the night, which is now being measured at more than two hectares in size.

West Kelowna fire crews handed control of the fire over to BC Wildfire Service, who are assessing the situation and will determine if the evacuation order can be lifted or not.

People living on Bear Creek Road, Bear Creek Main, Rose Valley Road, Petterson Road and Dougmac Road are being asked to be prepared to leave their homes at a moments notice.

Packing essential items and making preparations for pets is key, and people living in the area should expect to be away from their homes for an undetermined length of time.

Air tankers and and helicopters were able to establish a “fire retardant box” around the fire Sunday afternoon and evening.
