English Bay beach chair and umbrella rentals officially launching this summer

The Vancouver Parks Board has officially given the go-ahead for beach chair and umbrella rentals at English Bay, after a proposal was approved in a majority vote Monday evening.

Parks Board Commissioner Sarah Kirby-Yung says that they’re working to have the rentals up and running just before the official start to summer on June 20.

“I think it’ll benefit Vancouverites in a lot of ways. First of all, it’ll provide sun protection, so that’s really important to keep everyone healthy,” she tells Vancity Buzz. “I think it’s also great for seniors and families who may not want to haul a bunch of stuff down to the beach with them.”

The motion passed 5-2, with the two dissenting voters saying it commercializes Vancouver’s parks.

The company chosen to facilitate the rentals is Canadian-owned Blue Hole Investments, a hotelier with resorts in South America.

Rates are still being finalized, but Kirby-Yung says they will start at $7 for an hour, and $20 to $25 for a full day beach chair and umbrella package rental.
