In the past few months we’ve seen a rapid decline in Vancouver movie theatres. First, the Rio was almost done, but was eventually saved. Then came the announcement that the Ridge Theatre was closing. That was followed but the announcement that Denman Cinemas will shut its doors and become a Dollar Store. Now, Empire Theatres in Vancouver’s entertainment district will be joining other casualties in our city’s cultural graveyard.
Over the past decade the theatre has been home to the Vancouver International Film Festival but after this year’s festival organizers will have to look for a new hub.
No word yet as to what is going to replace it; being that it’s on Granville, it’ll most likely be a lounge or night club.
