Metrotown hotel opening all 169 guest rooms to hospital workers for free

A sizeable and relatively new hotel property in Burnaby’s Metrotown downtown district is opening its doors to local hospital workers in need of a safe and comfortable place to stay away.

And most importantly, it is completely free for these workers.

Element Vancouver Metrotown, operated by Marriott’s Westin division, announced on Thursday, anyone working with Fraser Health Authority can use its hotel property to self-quarantine, rest, or live away from their families.

The hotel is located within the base of 2015-built Sovereign mixed-use tower at 5988 Willingdon Avenue — the northeast corner of the intersection of Kingsway and Willingdon Avenue. It is conveniently located near SkyTrain’s Metrotown and Patterson stations, as well as various major bus routes.

There are 169 guest rooms in the hotel, which is located within the lower levels of the building.

The free accommodations for healthcare workers is made possible by local developer Bosa Properties, which owns the tower including the hotel property.

Bosa Properties will cover the full cost of the room, taxes, and parking for hospital employees in Fraser Health Authority. The hotel would otherwise be largely vacant right now.

Hospital workers can stay at Element guest rooms for up to 14 nights.

“Through this crisis, we’re learning that it’s more important than ever to come together as a community, to step up and find ways to support each other,” said Colin Bosa, CEO of Bosa Properties, in a statement.

“For some, home has been a mainstay of our lives during this time of social distancing, self-isolation, and quarantine. For our front-line workers, in order to keep their own homes healthy, that often means staying away. Our doors will remain open, as a temporary home, until it’s safe for them to return to their own.”

Hotel staff are practicing enhanced cleansing and disinfecting measures to reduce the risk of the spread of the coronavirus in their property.

All hospital workers with Fraser Health Authority are urged to reach out to Element directly at [email protected] or 604-568-3696 for more information and to book available rooms.

Fraser Health Authority’s covers entails much of the Lower Mainland, beyond Vancouver. It has 24,000 staff across 12 acute care hospitals, with the nearest hospitals being Burnaby Hospital and New Westminster’s Royal Columbian Hospital.

Sovereign, one of Burnaby’s tallest towers, also includes about 100,000 sq. ft. of retail space within its base, including a Trattoria restaurant and GoodLife Fitness gym, which are both temporarily closed. There are 200 condominiums within the upper levels of the tower.
