The statue of Gretzky, who starred for the Oilers from 1978 until 1988, was unveiled on Aug. 27, 1989, at the old Northlands Coliseum, more recently known as Rexall Place. It was moved to the Oilers new arena, Rogers Place, ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.
It isn’t known what the motivation behind this act was, though it’s worth noting that Gretzky has had his fair share of detractors as of late. The 64-year-old has been heavily criticized for his close relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Gretzky was further criticized ahead of the final game at the 4 Nations Face-Off, where some felt a thumbs-up gesture he gave to the U.S. bench disrespected the Canadians. Following all the backlash he has received, his wife, Janet, recently said on Instagram that it has “broken his heart.”
An Edmonton Police spokesperson wrote to Offside that they did not find any evidence that today’s incident was reported to authorities. Offside has also reached out to the Oilers organization for comment.
The statue vandalization comes just days after a Gretzky poster at a liquor store in Toronto was scribbled on in big font that included “f*** Gretzky,” “fight back,” and “fascist.”
