Edler, Sutter, Vrbata done for season with injuries

The Vancouver Canucks will play out the remainder of the season without three notable players, Willie Desjardins announced after practice today.

The Canucks lost Edler (fractured foot) and Sutter (fractured jaw) in the same game, a 3-1 win in Colorado on February 9th. Both players were expected to be out until April at the earliest, and with the playoffs no longer a realistic possibility, it doesn’t make sense to rush either player back for a couple of meaningless games before the regular season finale against Edmonton on April 9.

The loss of Edler and Sutter pretty much put the last nail in the coffin for this Canucks season. They were 21-20-12 after the game in which they got injured. Since then, the team is 6-12-0.

While Edler and Sutter will rest up and return next season, Radim Vrbata has played his last game as a Canuck.

Vrbata suffered a knee injury Friday in Edmonton, and has been battling injuries for the last month. In many ways it makes sense to close the book on his dreadful season.

After a 63-point season (31-32-63) and a team MVP award last year, Vrbata has been a shadow of his former self this season. He has just 27 points (13-14-27) in 63 games this season and has been the team’s most disappointing player. He ends his season having scored just two goals in his last 21 games.

Whether it be bad luck, lack of interest, or age catching up to the soon-to-be 35-year-old, moving on from Vrbata sooner rather than later is probably the right course of action.

The Canucks have 11 games remaining and should be officially eliminated from the playoffs long before game #82.
