Eaton's returns to downtown Vancouver on Friday

Dec 20 2017, 1:28 am

Do you remember when the Eaton’s department store was still around and occupied the building space that is now home to the Nordstrom Vancouver flagship store?

On Friday morning, the same day that Nordstrom opens its Vancouver store, Eaton’s branded merchandise – such as t-shirts, hats, toques, tote bags, pins and stickers – will be available on the 700 block of Granville Street. The throwback project is an initiative of Gastown’s Menu Skateboard Shop.

The 1869-founded chain was once the largest department store in Canada; in its heyday, it was even larger than the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Up until its bankruptcy in 1999, Eaton’s occupied the entire seven-storey Pacific Centre building at 725 Granville Street, which was designed by Argentine American architect Cesar Pelli and completed in 1973.

Pelli’s boxy design was windowless and had a facade comprised of large white marble panels. The building later gained its ‘toilet bowl’ nickname after two floors were added in the 1980s, which drastically changed the original design.

Sears took over all of Eaton’s assets in 2000, until it too faced financial trouble and returned several building leases back to their landlords. This included the Sears Vancouver store at Pacific Centre, which closed its doors in 2012.

Of course, in the years that followed, the building was completely gutted and rebuilt for its new retail and office tenants.
