Dec 19 2017, 10:54 pm

This is the fourth article in our Eat Local Spotlight series highlighting local Vancouver food producers who have a mission to enhance our relationship to food.

Pastiche Foods is among the growing list of local food producers who value quality and health in the products they make. Their selection of vegetable, nut and seed pates are handmade in small batches and packed with nutrient-dense foods.

“I grew up with parents who made everything we ate,” explains Chashma Heinze, founder of Pastiche Foods. The recipe that you taste now is crafted from a recipe her father made her when she was growing up on Hornby Island. Over the years the recipe developed as he added new ingredients and experimented with the flavours.

Using her culinary training, Heinze has finessed the line and created four unique flavours: Forest Mushroom, Market Herb, Sunshine Tomato and Golden Squash & Sage.

True to the family-style beginning of the vegetable pate, it’s home-cooked meal beginnings are kept preservative free.  “Good food is supposed to go bad,” Heinze reminds us, and it’s not supposed to last forever on a shelf. Using premium fresh organic and mainly local ingredients is one of the reasons that this product is unique. “Healthy food can taste good… and this is part of this notion of how do you create wholesome foods that actually feed you really well.”

The vegetable based pates are made from whole foods such as flax, hemp, buckwheat, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, making it a complete vegetarian protein source. In addition, it’s a source of omega 3 fatty acids and many vitamins and minerals. They are gluten free and vegan so they can also be enjoyed by those with dietary allergies or restrictions.

Try the pate:

  • on hot buttered toast
  • fried, in a tortilla with greens and dressing
  • stuffed in a mushroom cap and baked
  • fried and added to a stir fry
  • as a gourmet veggie burger
  • on a charcuterie board with crackers

Enjoy a sample of all the flavours by stopping by the Pastiche Foods booth at Vancouver Farmers Market, or find them at Donalds Market, Choices (Cambie or Yaletown locations), Harvest Community Foods, Greens Market and online on SPUD.
