East Van Eats: Campagnolo Roma

Campagnolo on Main has always had solid pastas and pizzas and I’ve been a huge fan for years. When I found out they had opened a location on East Hastings, I was eager to try. We headed there last month on a nice warm evening, so we took advantage of the weather and decided to sit on their little patio outside. They always have Daily Specials, so please ensure you check out the chalkboard.

Because we were trying to eat a bit healthier, we decided to start with the Misticanza Salad. It was a simple green salad with shaved cucumber and a sprinkle of radishes. The dressing was a light oil and balsamic, very mild and didn’t overpower the greens at all, just enough to give everything a little glisten. I think I would have preferred some cherry tomatoes or some peppers to give the salad a bit of extra texture.

We tried the Margherita Pizza, a traditional version with fior di latte, light layer of tomato sauce and some basil. We added an egg for $1 and the pancetta was $3 extra. So in total, this was a $17 pizza. The dough is chewier than your Napoletana pizzas and slightly denser and has more of a bite too. The toppings are a bit spartan, but the flavours are bold. A runnier egg would have been nicer, and perhaps positioning it closer to the centre of the pizza would have been better?

As a dipping sauce for the crust, our waitress offered us a house made concoction of fennel seeds, chili flakes, black pepper steeped in olive oil. This had a great earthiness to it and was a good addition to the dish. However, instead of dipping the crust into the sauce, spoon some out onto the crust instead, I find it helps to avoid excessive oiliness.

And to round out the meal, we ordered one of the Pasta Specials, the Pappardelle with Sloping Hills Pork Ragu and topped with Pecorino. It sounds plain and in reality it is, but since they don’t offer Pappardelle on their menu normally, I knew this pasta would be fresh and indeed it was. Thick, smooth and flat noodles cooked to a perfect al dente. The meaty ragu clung well onto the noodle, so that every bit had a bit of both.

They also have some great deals, such as ‘Pizza and a Beer’ nightly 5-6pm and 9-10pm, and lunchtime for just $15. And Lunch Specials on weekdays where you can get a Grilled Sandwich with Soup or Greens for just $10.
