East Broadway at Main Street to fully reopen with four vehicle lanes tomorrow after subway construction milestone

On the morning of Thursday, June 25, 2026, the one-block stretch of East Broadway between Main Street and Quebec Street will reopen to its full permanent configuration of four vehicle traffic lanes — two in each direction.
The provincial government announced this evening that road restoration work on this block above the future Mount Pleasant Station for SkyTrain’s Millennium Line Broadway extension has progressed ahead of schedule. Previously, the full reopening of all four vehicle traffic lanes had been scheduled for July.

In a welcome improvement for struggling local businesses and accessibility, the pedestrian sidewalk along the south side of East Broadway will also reopen.
This block of East Broadway was fully closed to vehicle traffic for four months before reopening with two lanes — one lane in each direction — on May 20, 2026. The full closure was necessary to safely remove the temporary traffic bridge deck spanning the station construction site, install new underground utilities, fill the depth above the subway station roof with compacted gravel, and restore the roadway.
Throughout the summer, crews will continue working in the area to complete the roadway and surrounding public realm. This will require intermittent partial lane closures to finish the sidewalks, apply the final lift of asphalt, install green infrastructure along the boulevard, and complete other finishing work, including street furniture.
In accordance to the City of Vancouver’s Broadway Plan, the blocks for all five subway station construction sites along Broadway will be restored to a configuration of four vehicle traffic lanes and wider pedestrian sidewalks, which will use space previously set aside for curbside vehicle parking prior to construction.

There will also be one more extended full road closure and detour at another subway station location to facilitate similar work involving the removal of a temporary traffic bridge deck and roadway restoration.
Shortly after the FIFA World Cup, Broadway between Cambie Street and Alberta Street — the site of the Millennium Line’s future Broadway-City Hall Station — will undergo a full two-block road closure for approximately six months, with a detour in place. More details on the closure and traffic management plan will be released closer to the start date.
For the other subway station construction blocks along Broadway — Oak-VGH Station, South Granville Station, and Arbutus Station — only partial lane closures are necessary.
Construction on the Broadway Subway project is now entering a highly advanced stage. The six-km, six-station Millennium Line extension from the existing VCC-Clark Station to the new Arbutus Station remains on track to open in late Fall 2027. A significant portion of the tracks has now been installed, initial testing with moving trains is underway, and work continues on the interiors and exteriors of the subway stations, including the construction of the street-level station entrance buildings.
