To celebrate Earth Day in a unique and exciting way, four local companies created EarthWork Day in 2012. SES Consulting, Recollective, Pulse Energy and HiVE paid their employees to get creative and make a difference around their community. Each employee was given a budget of $22, and in teams, they hit the streets –or their computers- for some Earth Day action.
According to organizers, EarthWork Day is about celebrating Earth Day by “walking the talk.”
With the success of the first year’s event, the groups are at it again this year and inviting others to join their day of making a difference. On April 22, at 9 a.m., individuals are asked meet at the HiVE to pitch their own ideas or participate in an existing project.
Existing projects include: School Outreach, in which individuals are asked to join a workshop on energy and climate change at Admiral Seymour Elementary as well as arranging donations for the school to help them with some of their underfunded needs. Waste Not Artists, this project creates a public art installation out of used disposable coffee cups to raise awareness and reduce environmental footprint by bringing ‘to go’ mugs. Earth Thank You, this team will work to acknowledge the positive decisions people make on Earth Day by handing out small eco-friendly gifts to people on the street. Free Bike Tune up provides free bike tune-ups to passing cyclists who stop at their station and giving participants ‘pay it forward’ receipts asking them to do something good for the environment in exchange. Guerrilla Gardening gives new life to gardens in the community, as well as cleaning up garbage to beautify the city.
Each project idea will have one person dedicated to photographing or taking video footage to document the day. Projects will have team leaders who will help organize each event.
