Residents of an apartment building in New Westminster were evacuated after an explosion that took place yesterday afternoon.

The explosion, which took place on Sunday, November 4 at around 1 pm, was caused by an alleged drug lab. When police entered the suite, they found evidence indicating the presence and production of narcotics – the man inside the suite was arrested shortly after.

In addition to police, firefighters arrived on scene to evacuate residents from the building. Support services were also present, in order to assist the displaced residents.

“What happened here could have been a lot worse,” said Sergeant Jeff Scott. “Many people could have been injured if the explosion was bigger or if the fire had spread.”

Members of the New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) are currently executing a search warrant and investigating the scene. Residents are still displaced, although police hope to have the building reopened later this evening.

The level of contamination, as well as the damage throughout the building, is still waiting to be confirmed.
