Driver's two parents killed in car collision on Main Street and 49th Avenue

Vancouver Police are investigating a fatal collision that occurred Thursday evening on Main Street near East 49th Avenue.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., a mini-van traveling south on Main Street swerved into the northbound lanes at East 49th Avenue and collided into the curb and five parked cars.

The 38-year-old man behind the wheel suffered major but non-life threatening injuries. However, both of his parents were killed in the accident.

The driver’s 82-year-old father was sitting in the back passenger seat and was pronounced dead at the scene. His 74-year-old mother, who was in the front passenger seat, later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

While the investigation is ongoing, police believe both deceased passengers were wearing their seat belts. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor. No determination has been made on the speed of the van.

Investigators will see if any medical issues may have played a role in the incident and will also examine the older model mini-van for any mechanical problems.

Both north and southbound traffic on Main Street between East 49th and 50th avenues will remain closed as police continue their investigation. This is the sixth and seventh traffic related fatality of the year.
