Traffic in downtown Vancouver is busy this morning, and a fire that has closed a portion of Seymour Street sure isn’t helping matters.
Daily Hive obtained information on the scene from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services Public Information Officer Matthew Trudeau, who told us that commuters can expect Seymour Street between Georgia and Robson to be closed for the next hour or so.
The impacted building is located near the corner of Seymour and Georgia.
Trudeau told Daily Hive that the flames have been knocked down, but there’s still some concern due to the equipment near where the fire was.
“It is away from any occupied areas, and it’s all concrete and metal. But there is a lot of machinery in the mechanical room up there.”

While a cause hasn’t yet been determined, Trudeau said the fire appears to have originated in an elevated mechanical room area and was large enough to damage its surrounding walls before being knocked down by fire crews.
Trudeau said VFRS got “a number of calls” from people in the area who reported black smoke. They also received some photos of black smoke in the area.
Some footage has also been shared online, showing a significant amount of smoke emanating from a Telus building located near 768 Seymour Street.

One of the primary reasons for the street closure is to prevent drivers from running over VFRS’ water lines, which are still deployed in the area.
We’ll have more on this once we learn about potential causes following the VFRS investigation.
