UBC concierge service brings clean laundry and snacks to your door

University students who are short on time might appreciate a new service that has launched in Vancouver.

DORMVIP is a concierge service for UBC students who just can’t seem to find the time between classes, studying, and partying to do their laundry. It’s built on a weekly subscription model, so all you have to do is sign up and your laundry will be cleaned every Saturday and delivered to you on Sunday.

Plus, you can choose from a variety of snack options to be packaged with your laundry, such as Goldfish crackers, instant noodles, Pellegrino sodas, and even healthier options like popcorn, water, and juice.

“We feel like laundry is a nuisance and they shouldn’t have to do that,” DORMVIP co-founder Carlos Plaschinski told Vancity Buzz.

Prices vary, but the more you purchase at one time, the more you save, Plaschinski said. One week is $24.99, a full month works out to $21.99 per week, and a full semester is $18.99 per week.

“When it comes down to it, we actually end up saving them money because laundry at the universities can range from $5 to $12 depending how big your load is,” said Plaschinski.

“The drying machines don’t work well – after doing some market research, we found out they have to put their clothes through a bunch of times.”

Plaschinski also speaks from experience – he graduated from UBC and said he loathed doing laundry on campus. He and his business partners wanted to improve the university experience by eliminating a mundane task from a student’s already massive to-do list.

“Our weekly time-saving service is equivalent to nonchalant daily spending like a cup of coffee you don’t need,” co-founder Paul Irving told Vancity Buzz.

For now, the service is only available at UBC, but they have plans to expand to SFU this year, as well as across the country.
