An outpouring of birthday wishes are flowing towards Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson as he celebrates his big 50th today.

Mayor Robertson was born in North Vancouver on September 18, 1964. He entered provincial politics in 2005 after being elected as the BC NDP MLA for the Vancouver-Fairview riding. Prior to politics, he co-founded Vancouver-based organic juice and smoothie company Happy Planet.

In 2008, Robertson defeated NPA mayoral candidate Peter Ladner to become the 39th Mayor of Vancouver. If he is re-elected for a third term during this November’s civic election, he will become Vancouver’s longest serving mayor – beating Philip Owen (1993-2002) by a single year.

Earlier this year, the provincial government enacted legislation that changed municipal government elections from a three-year to a four-year cycle beginning with the 2014 elections.
