Vancouver dog owners can now spoil their pooches even more with a new mail order service offering canine conveniences.
BarkBox is a monthly gift box subscription that includes hand-selected goodies and essentials for man’s best friend – delivered right to your doorstep.
The best part is you can customize the monthly delivery to your dog’s size, meaning your teacup Yorkie won’t end up with a bully stick the size of its head.
I signed up to the service for my terrier Murphy to see what the fuss is about. The first box arrived chock full of great stuff: organic duck meat treats from Etta Says!, bite-sized off-leash beef jerky treats, a carrot cake freezable smoothie and a great bat retrievable chew toy.
Pretty great for $19.
All of the treats are made in the USA or Canada, and 10 per cent of the revenue goes towards supporting local rescue groups.
BarkBox CEO Chris O’Brien told Vancity Buzz a lot of care goes into selecting the products for the monthly deliveries.
“BarkBoxes contain all-natural treats and other the coolest pup products in each box — things you can’t find at the typical big-box pet store,” he said.
“We have our treat and toy scouts scouring the country every month for the best toys and treats that will make your dog happy and healthy.”
My only complaint about the service would be that it almost has too many items. Like, my dog is overweight, so he would look like a helium balloon if I fed him two bags of treats in one month. But if you have a normal – i.e. active dog that prefers running to couch sitting – you’d be just fine.
And not to leave the cats out – there’s a Meowbox as well — which was just profiled on VCB.
Barkbox also has a really wonderful Instagram account, packed with adorable photos of dogs. It’s so cute, in fact, it was just given a feature on BuzzFeed. It also runs a BuzzFeed-style site called BarkPost, with daily doggy musings.

The boxes are shipped on the 15th of each month.
