Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Vancouver Coastal Health’s Dr. Ross Brown will head BC’s COVID-19 vaccine program.

His role will become important in the coming months as vaccine candidates get approved and need to be distributed to people around the world.

Brown is currently VCH’s vice president for pandemic response, where he leads the region’s response to the public health emergency.

He is a trauma surgeon with military experience, completing tours in Bosnia and Kandahar. He was Canada’s first embedded military trauma surgeon, and is credited with starting the Canadian Forces Trauma Training Centre (West).

Brown also supported a clinic in Whistler for athlete injuries during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Health Minister Adrian Dix characterized him as “really an extraordinary figure,” during the bi-weekly COVID-19 update Wednesday afternoon.
