Doc: Jann Arden on horse slaughter in Canada, and how volunteers are trying to save them

Dec 19 2017, 6:22 pm

Walking through the muddy grounds of an auction house, one woman notices the sad look of a horse locked away in a pen awaiting its fate. “I think they know it isn’t right,” she says, knowing that she can’t save them all. Every day in Canada horses, both domestic and wild, are sent to slaughter.

Now, two British Columbia women have devoted themselves to saving as many horses as they can afford through donation. The women attend auctions to bid against meat buyers, and if successful, bring the horses back to their farm, “Second Chance Horse Rescue,” where they nourish and strengthen them, then put them up for adoption.

The issue has attracted the attention of animal activist and singer/songwriter Jann Arden, who met VancityBuzz’s Nicolle Hodges in Alberta, where the slaughter of horses is a growing issue.

This documentary was produced by Sarah Gray, Nicolle Hodges of VancityBuzz, and Neetu Garcha.
