This Disney cruise ship just got a big magical makeover in a B.C. shipyard drydock

Even a Disney cruise ship needs a little help keeping the magic afloat.

Disney Wonder spent 14 days undergoing maintenance and refurbishment at Seaspan Victoria Shipyards in Esquimalt in Greater Victoria on Vancouver Island, in the second half of August 2026.

More than 100 projects were completed during the visit, giving the vessel a refresh from its passenger spaces to its hull.

Now, weeks later, Disney Cruise Line shared a rare peek behind the magical curtain, showing the work that goes into getting one of its ships ready for its next chapter at sea.

Disney Wonder arrived at the Esquimalt Graving Dock during a break in its Alaska cruise season.

A dry dock gives workers access to parts of a ship that would normally be underwater, while also providing an opportunity to tackle renovations inside.

According to Disney, nearly 1,000 crew members and Disney cast members contributed to the project, with teams working around the clock during the two-week turnaround.

Disney notes that these tightly scheduled refits involve years of planning, bringing together shipboard teams, technical specialists, Walt Disney Imagineers, and skilled tradespeople to the shipyard. Maintenance, inspections, and improvements to passenger spaces are coordinated within the ship’s time out of service.

Inside, about 19 km of new carpet was installed. Work was also performed to refresh spaces for relaxing and playing, along with touch-ups to some familiar Disney characters.

Among the passenger amenities highlighted by Disney is an updated Edge club for children, with a new colour scheme and adaptable features that allow the space to accommodate different activities.

However, some of the work will be harder for passengers to spot.

Workers applied a new hull coating over a surface area Disney compares to 10 football fields. Such a coating refresh reduces frictional water drag, which helps reduce the amount of fuel the ship needs.

For Seaspan, looking after cruise ships is part of a much broader ship-repair business.

Seaspan Victoria Shipyards is the commercial tenant and operator of the Government of Canada-owned Esquimalt Graving Dock, handling work on commercial vessels as well as Canadian naval frigates and submarines.

Large cruise ships are regular customers for maintenance and repairs at Seaspan’s facilities in both the Victoria area and North Vancouver.

Disney Wonder has been there before, too, with a previous visit coinciding with the 2023 Alaska cruise season.

As well, in August 2026, Azamara Pursuit was in the drydock at the Seaspan North Vancouver shipyards for some routine maintenance.

Disney Wonder is in very familiar waters. Since 2011, apart from a one-year relocation to Seattle in 2012 and the suspension during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, Disney Wonder has designated Downtown Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise ship terminal as its homeport for the Alaska cruise season each year, making it a long-running staple in the city’s cruise industry.

The homeport designation is very significant. Unlike the cruise ships that make a mid-itinerary stopover at Victoria, small Alaskan communities, Quebec City, and Halifax, the overwhelming majority of the cruise ships that serve Vancouver use Canada Place as their start and end point for Alaska cruise itineraries.

A homeport is the start and end point for a cruise — where passengers disembark at the end of their itinerary and enable a new group of passengers to board. This homeport stay also enables ships to be resupplied with food and fuel, and enables repairs and other services between voyages.

Moreover, the sister vessel of Disney Magic also visited Seaspan Victoria Shipyards earlier this year for drydocking and routine maintenance, coinciding with its first-ever Alaska cruise season by using Vancouver as its homeport.

And for the first time ever, in 2026, there were two Disney cruise ships serving Vancouver during the Alaska cruise season. Using Canada Place as the homeport, Disney Wonder made 21 visits, while Disney Magic made 20 visits. Disney Wonder was also the very first cruise ship to visit Vancouver for the 2026 season.

For the 2027 Alaska cruise season, both ships will be making a return to Vancouver, with Disney Wonder scheduled to make 20 visits and the Disney Magic with 19 visits.

Both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder hold a special company and industry significance, as these Magic-class vessels were the very first ships of Disney Cruise Line. Disney Magic made its debut in 1997, while Disney Wonder entered service in 1998.

The 2026 cruise ship season in Vancouver came to a close on Oct. 13, when the Norwegian Encore left Canada Place as the season’s final ship visit. Vancouver Fraser Port Authority notes that the 2026 season was a record-breaking year for Canada Place, with about 1.4 million cruise passengers recorded on 358 ship visits. This exceeds the previous record in 2024 of 1.32 million cruise passengers on 327 ship visits.

Currently, the 2027 cruise ship season is expected to begin on March 24, when the Europa arrives at Canada Place to be Vancouver’s first cruise ship visit of the season. But like previous years, the season will not truly kick off until late April, when Canada Place begins to see a cruise ship visit almost every single day through early October. The 2027 season will come to an official close on Oct. 8 with a visit by the Ovation of the Seas.
