Want to change careers? Learn a trade? Or just not sure what to do once that high school diploma is in your hands?

Today, more and more high school and even university grads are looking towards college courses to get their hands on not only another degree, but real life, hands-on experience. College is a lot more than just an education, it’s about gaining knowledge and experience so that each student graduated ready to dive into their dream career.

So how do you get into college and start your perfect program? We chatted with admissions advisor, Ursula Petrov who has been at the New West campus for over 20 years, to find out how you can jump-start your career at Sprott Shaw College:

What’s the best part about working at Sprott Shaw?

Every day, I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. Our students range from high school graduates to adults in their 50s and 60s who all come from a variety of different backgrounds. At Sprott Shaw we give students confidence and the ability to believe in themselves and gain a ‘can do’ attitude. Seeing my students blossom in front of my eyes makes each day special.

What advice do you have for people going to college?

Don’t hesitate to make a career change or get the formal training you need to go after your passion. We are a friendly and supportive campus ready to help our students every step of the way.

After hearing how positive and passionate Urusla is about her job, we asked how someone finds his or her perfect career?

You first have to have a passion for the field and then get the necessary education. Sprott Shaw will arrange the students’ practicums, which often lead to permanent employment.  Once employed, work hard, have a great attitude, be punctual and ethical and always give excellent customer service.

When it comes to program picking and career planning, what industries do you think are currently booming in Vancouver?

Community Support Worker and Health Care Assistants

What careers do you believe will be important to Vancouver’s future?

Nursing and Early Childhood Education.

So most importantly, why choose Sprott Shaw?

Most of my graduates give me thank you cards saying this was one of their best experiences ever. The support, the advice, the family atmosphere; we have monthly assemblies, and students’ birthdays are even celebrated with a birthday cake and much more.

The college’s hands on, practical teaching also gives its students a real advantage. It has smaller class sizes and programs that teach you the necessary skills to reach your full potential and accomplish your career goals.
