Development Buzz: 508 Helmcken Street

Here is another contentious development taking place in the city of Vancouver. The proposal at 508 Helmcken Street, located next to Emery Barnes Park, has been approved by the City of Vancouver urban design panel.

Currently at the site is a 1980’s non market housing apartment called Jubilee House. Jubilee House will be replaced by a new 13 storey development across the street, which is currently a Montessori School and sushi restaurant.

The proposal calls for a 36-storey tower designed by GBL Architects. It will include a mix of 355 condos and 109 market rental units. It will contain a pre-school and kindergarten, which will occupy two floors. Having more schooling options downtown is necessary, it’s great that the city has added this into the project, however, the city needs to go further and have greater options for schooling.
