[UPDATED] Deep South BBQ joint shutters after 6 month stint

Dec 20 2017, 4:28 am

It has only been about six months since Deep South, a BBQ joint serving authentic Southern-inspired eats, made its debut, but as of this week, the West Pender Street locale has closed its doors for good.

While the restaurant’s social media pages don’t allude to this cease in operation or that closing was even in the cards (one unsuspecting Instagram message posted a week ago from the Deep South account even says, “Some exciting news coming soon. Wait for it….. Announcing next week”), a “for lease sign” in the window certainly does.

Currently, Deep South’s door is plastered with notices, some stating that the “locks have been changed.”

UPDATE-March 2: Vancity Buzz spoke with Deep South’s owners, who clarified that the bills were definitely paid at 420 West Pender Street. Being situated on the fringe of Gastown and the Business District, a lack of foot traffic motivated the owners to seek an alternative brick and mortar location. Still waiting on final approval from the city, the owners can’t give away too much information at this time over where Deep South is relocating to, however, they did hint that the new location will remain downtown.

Some of original staff members, along with equipment, smokers, and tools are all patiently waiting for final approval, and are ready to continue making great ribs and other authentic Southern-inspired eats. Deep South hopes to re-open in the spring, just in time for the BBQ season.

For further developments on Deep South’s relocation stay tuned to the eatery’s social media pages.
