A Day in the Life of Urban Reef at Robson Square (TIME LAPSE VIDEO)

Have you checked out this year’s temporary public space furniture on the street at Robson Square?

The winning design was chosen from a pool of 78 entries submitted for a public competition held this past spring. The winning team received a $40,000 honorarium from the municipal government to cover the costs of materials, fabrication, construction, installation, and de-installation for their project.

The annual summertime closure of the 800 block of Robson Street for use as a pedestrian-only public space is one of the major components of the City of Vancouver’s VIVA Vancouver program. This is the fourth year that the street has been closed off to make way for temporary seasonal pedestrian space and furniture.

Installation was completed on June 26, but its days are numbered as dismantling is scheduled for September 1.

While its sleek design has been praised, public opinion has been mixed on social media due to its limited functional use and ‘underwhelming’ scale compared to the city block encompassing designs of previous years.

Local photographer Andrew Latreille captured a time lapse video of passersby sitting on and enjoying Urban Reef.
