Davis Cup quarterfinals draw set

The BC Sports Hall of Fame played host to the Official Draw of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Quarterfinal tie between Canada and Italy, Thursday, April 4, 2013. The matches will be contested at the indoor hard court of the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre at the University of British Columbia from April 5 to 7, 2013.

Just prior to the start of the draw, both teams made player substitutions. Jesse Levine will take the place of Frank Dancevic, making his Davis Cup debut for Canada, and Daniele Braccialli will replace Simone Bolelli for Italy. No official press release regarding the changes was made at the time of the quarterfinal draw. Both substitutions were nominated due to injuries, and were last minute changes.

“This all happened yesterday afternoon,” team captain Martin Laurendeau explained. “Frank had training camp in Montreal and came here early, and everything was going well, but then his knee flared up over the last few days. He’s just too hindered now in his movement to be competitive in the five Davis Cup situations. The good thing about this team is that we have depth, and have five guys ready to play at any time. Jesse will take the spot and be ready to play if called upon.”

The Miele Canadian Davis Cup team will consist of Levine, Daniel Nestor, Vasek Pospisil, and World No. 16 Singles Milos Raonic. This will be Canada’s first-ever quarterfinal tie appearance.

Regarding his substitution, Dancevic said, “I feel a little disappointed that I’m not playing. I’d love to be playing, but its ok. I still feel really good about the situation though. We have a really good team, and really good players. This is just part of the Davis Cup. Cheering on the people around you and being honest about what’s happening, and sometimes you have to give other people the opportunity to be in the spot light when you’re not feeling 100 percent. That’s just part of being a team member and I’ll be cheering hard all weekend.”

The draw’s produced the following weekend match ups:

Friday, April 5

1st Singles Rubber                      Vasek Pospisil (CAN) vs Andreas Seppi (ITA)

2nd Singles Rubber                     Milos Raonic (CAN) vs Fabio Fognini (ITA)

Saturday, April 6

Doubles Rubber                           Daniel Nestor/Vasek Pospisil (CAN) vs Daniele Bracciali/Paolo Lorenzi (ITA)

Sunday, April 7

3rd Singles Rubber                      Milos Raonic (CAN) vs Andreas Seppi (ITA)

4th Singles Rubber                      Vasek Pospisil (CAN) vs Fabio Fognini (ITA)

Speaking to the pressure placed upon him as the highest ranked Canadian player going into the Davis Cup quarterfinals, and on the team itself, Raonic said, “It’s a team event, and the quarterfinals are a position we’ve never been in. Ever. At the same time, we’re trained to play tennis. You get out there and play singles. You get out there and you play doubles. Nothing changes. The lines aren’t any different. The courts aren’t any different. You just have to play tennis, and play well to win. You need to do everything you can to get yourself in that position.

Play will begin at 1:00 p.m. PT on Friday, April 5 with two singles matches. The doubles match will take place Saturday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m. PT and the remaining two singles matches will be on Sunday, April 7 at 2:00 p.m. PT. The matches will be broadcast on Sportsnet and TVA Sports. For the full TV schedule, please click here.
