Locally-inspired sustainable sandwich menu launches in Vancouver

Every time we learn about an innovative approach to culinary creations in Vancouver, it makes the top of our must-try list. So you can imagine our reaction when we heard about Oroweat Organic partnering with local cafe-grocer DALINA to create a limited-time menu.

Available from February 7 to March 14 at DALINA stores in Vancouver (and also for delivery), the Oroweat Organic 50 Mile Menu is a collection of mouth-watering sandwiches made entirely from ingredients produced within 50 miles of Vancouver.

The menu of delicious handheld eats highlights the work of the Lower Mainland’s farmers and the sustainable, quality ingredients they produce. DALINA’s Innovation Chef, Matt Sanderson, developed the menu, featuring three limited-edition sandwiches, to inspire us all to take a break from cooking at home and eat local instead.

First, there’s the Porchetta Sandwich with fresh herbs. It features pork supplied by Cioffi’s Meat Market in Burnaby (and sourced from Langley’s Britco Farms), plus parsley, thyme, and oregano from Evergreen Herb Farms in Surrey — all held together by Oroweat Organic 22 Grains & Seeds bread, baked in Langley.

Next, we have the Roasted Chicken Sandwich. For this delicious option, chicken is provided through Cioffi’s Meat Market (and sourced from Rossdown Farms in Abbotsford); butter lettuce is from CubicFarms in Langley; arugula, lemon balm, and fresh basil are supplied by Barnston Island Herbs in Surrey; oregano and thyme are from Evergreen Herb Farms; Charmisan (Parmigiano-Reggiano style) cheese by Golden Ears Cheesecrafters in Maple Ridge; and the bread that holds it all together is Oroweat Organic’s 100% Whole Grain variety.

Lastly, there’s a vegan-friendly option with the Roasted Portobello Sandwich. You’ll taste portobello mushrooms supplied by Your Wildest Foods in Abbotsford; thyme, sunchokes, leeks, and oregano from Evergreen Herb Farms; butter lettuce from CubicFarms; and two slices of Oroweat Organic Quinoa and Sunflower Seeds bread supporting this goodness. 

Each sandwich is made using a variety of Oroweat Organic bread, all of which are plant-based, non-GMO certified, and produced in Langley with a reduced carbon footprint. The bread specialist uses only certified organic ingredients (grown in a way that helps make the soil richer and promotes biodiversity), and 100% of its baked waste goes to animal feed.

Through this all-new collaboration, Oroweat Organic and DALINA hope to reinforce their commitment to sustainably-sourced ingredients. Oroweat Organic already matches 100% of the electricity usage that goes into baking its bread with electricity produced from renewable sources and 100% of the fuel usage that goes into delivering its products with green certificates.

Giving back is important to Oroweat Organic, and the brand donates one percent of revenues to environmental causes as a member of 1% For The Planet. It also supports environmental and community initiatives in Western Canada through a partnership with Tree Canada.

Like all good things, the Oroweat Organic 50 Mile Menu will be coming to an end on March 14.

For sandwich delivery right to your doorstep, order via Uber Eats or for pick-up via DALINA’s Craver app. Vancouverites will also enjoy an automatic 20% discount on Oroweat Organic 50 Mile Menu sandwiches when ordering via Uber Eats until March 14.
