An annual canine tradition that combines extreme cuteness with adoption awareness is set to take over West Vancouver’s Lighthouse Park.
The 21st annual Westie Walk is slated for Sunday, May 29, and more than 100 West Highland White Terriers and their owners are expected.
The event includes a wiener dunk, Westie race, silent auction and raffle. In Scottish tradition, the walk kicks off with a bag piper leading the pups.
Entry is by donation and benefits the non-profit, volunteer-run Westie Rescue of Canada, a breed-specific rescue that helps re-home these sassy terriers. Donations over $25 are tax deductible and the group will provide a tax receipt.
Organizer Kiera Schwegler says although they mostly see Westies at the walk, all breeds are welcome.
She says although a lot of people see Westies as a small cuddly lap dog, that’s not necessarily the case.
“Westies are dogs with attitude for sure,” she says.
