Crosswalk Fail?

This photo of a crosswalk somewhere in East Van (best guess is 49th or 33rd avenue, the Vancouver special was a dead giveaway) was taken by Vancouver’s favourite tweeter @kardboard. Now I’m not sure the lines should have been painted in that manner.

I guess the crew was smoking something when they painted that or perhaps there is a rational explanation for this. Anybody have any insight?
