A teenager in New Westminster had to be hospitalized this past weekend after allegedly being beaten by a man with a metal baseball bat.

The incident began at around 8 pm on Saturday, when the teen – along with three others – was walking home down the 700 block of 20th Street in New Westminster.

All of a sudden, a soccer ball that belonged to one member of the the group rolled into the road and into the path of a passing vehicle.

The vehicle then stopped and a man allegedly got out of the passenger side and began to chase the youths with the bat.

He then managed to catch up with one of the teens who was reportedly struck with the bat and required hospitalization.

NWPD Sgt. Jeff Scott called the actions of the motorist a “gross overreaction.”

Scott added that police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
