For anyone wanting to be a part of B.C.’s growing craft distilling business, Capilano University is offering a new workshop that might be of interest.

Capilano University is offering a five-day workshop designed to provide you with everything you need to know about the distillation process and how to start your own Artisan Craft Distilling business. The workshop is in partnership with the Artisan Craft Distilling Institute, which has been providing training in craft distilling since 2010.

During the workshop participants can expect to learn the basics of the distilling process, equipment overview, the process of fermentation, the engineering and science behind distilling, distilling different types of spirits, gauging your spirits and what makes a successful distillery. The workshop will also cover topics such as marketing, labelling, licensing and business planning to make sure participants walk away with a full understanding of what it takes to thrive in the growing industry.

The course is headed by Deanna Keener, the CEO of the Artisan Craft Distilling Institute and owner of Washington based Spyder Lake Winery. Students will also get hands on experience with professional distillery equipment at Gillespies Fine Spirits in Squamish and will hear from the founders Kelly Woods and John McLellan.

The total cost for the five day workshop is $1,875 and it runs from April 13 – 17 in Squamish, and,of course, participants have to be over 19 years of age to register. If you’re interested in the program, you can find out more on Capilano’s website here.
