Courtney Sarault has landed on the podium for the third time at the Milano Cortina Olympics. The 25-year-old short-track speed skater from Moncton, N.B. won silver in the women’s 1,000-metre race Monday in Milan.

Sarault previously won bronze in the women’s 500-metre race and silver in the 2,000-metre mixed relay.

Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands won gold, while South Korea’s Kim Gilli took bronze.

Sarault entered the race as the No. 1 ranked skater and posted the fastest time in the semi-final. She led for much of the final, too, before falling into second with three laps to go and third with two laps to go. The Canadian fought back into silver-medal positioning in the final lap.

“I made a little error in the last part of my race, and it costed me a positioning,” she said, later adding that she went too wide, allowing the Korean skater to pass her with two laps to go. “But I’m happy with how I pushed back from third place into silver. I raced with my heart, and I gave everything I could.”

Canada now has 10 medals at the Winter Olympics, one gold, four silver, and five bronze. Half of those medals have come in speed skating — two in long track and three in short track.

Daily Hive asked Sarault if she’ll get a chance to celebrate winning another medal, given she has another event coming up in two days. The women’s 3,000-metre relay is on Wednesday and the women’s 1,500-metre race is scheduled for Friday.

“Nope! I don’t. Gotta rest and recover.”
