A Metro Vancouver teacher who taught in the Coquitlam School District got suspended after admitting to several violations.

According to the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, Kylejeet Grewal was employed by School District No. 43 (Coquitlam).

On May 8, 2023, the District made a report to the Commissioner about Grewal. The report states that the following incidents occurred during the 2022/2023 school year.

On Nov. 27, 2022, Grewal had written an “inappropriate and unprofessional” email regarding Student A. The email was addressed to the student’s parent. Grewal stated he believed the student was a “gangster wannabe.”

Grewal said he didn’t have the professional expertise to help the student, but recommended a “board-certified psychiatrist for evaluation.”

He also said he can no longer help a student who doesn’t want to be helped. Grewal didn’t communicate his concerns before sending the email to the parents.

On Jan. 17, 2023, Grewal sent another email about Student A to school administrators. In the email, Grewal suspected that Student A and their parents were involved in a gang.

Grewal had also made inappropriate comments about Student A to another student, telling the student not to date Student A because Student A “was not a good kid, would not treat them well, had sold drugs, and that they should not be friends with Student A.”

On Jan. 19, 2023, Grewal acted unprofessionally during an interaction with two grade 11 students in the hallway. The report states that the interaction was confrontational and that when the students refused to accompany Grewal to the office, he said, “Are you too much of a pu**y to go to the office?”

After the hallway incident, Grewal was advised by the vice principal that the interaction was under investigation. Grewal did not maintain confidentiality and treated one of the students involved in the interaction adversely.

At one point, in another hallway interaction, Grewal told a student to get to class and said, “he bet the student felt pretty good about themself for selling drugs to underage kids.”

The student responded by saying they worked for their parent. Grewal replied and said, “I bet you do.”

The Coquitlam teacher was issued a seven-day suspension on May 6, 2023. After the Commissioner’s report, he was handed another one-day suspension that was served on May 25, 2026. He was also ordered to complete several courses regarding creating a positive learning environment.

There’s more on Grewal’s unprofessional behaviour on the Commissioner’s website.
