Coquitlam School District has laid off 632 teachers due to an budgetary deficit for the current fiscal year.

School district officials cite that a $13.4 million shortfall is to blame. Teachers affected have been receiving layoff notices today.

News of the mass layoffs comes in midst of the ongoing BC Teacher’s Federation-led job action.

The layoff threshold affected teachers with a seniority of less than 8 years, 4 months. Coquitlam had 1,786 full-time equivalent teaching positions for the 2013 to 2014 school year, and the layoffs equate to a reduction of 35 per cent in teaching positions.

Apparently, these types of layoffs are seasonal, happening on a yearly basis. During the 2012 to 2013 school year, 400 teachers were laid off and all but two were recalled.

For the upcoming school year, it is expected that 90 to 100 teachers will not be called to return to their positions.
