Concert Review: Majid Jordan's impressive sold-out Vancouver debut (PHOTOS)

One of Toronto’s biggest musical exports stopped into Vancouver on Thursday night for a sold-out debut show at the Alexander.

Majid Jordan were once labeled “up-and-coming” artists, but their show proved otherwise. The duo, known as Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman, are recording producers signed under Drake’s OVO Sound record label. Last year, they released A Place Like This, a five-song debut that resulted in pretty much five successful singles. The EP left fans wanting more, and the boys delivered earlier this year with the release of “My Love”, featuring Drake. And now, just a week after they announced their debut album release date for February 5 2016, Majid Jordan gave us a glimpse of their live talent on Thursday.

The show was sold-out over a month in advance, and there was barely any room to move inside the small venue on Thursday night. With large pillars, and three floors, fans scrambled around minutes before midnight to try to get the perfect spot to watch the Toronto heartthrobs. The moment the boys were spotted girls screamed, and Majid took to the mic as Jordan slipped through behind the DJ booth. “What’s up, Vancouver?” Majid said, and with the crowd warmed up, My Love was very well-received – especially when Majid sang Drake’s part of the track.

But as much as we love Drake, this was definitely a night that was all about Majid Jordan. While singing “A Place Like This”, Majid held girls’ hands at the front of the stage as he sang, “Go on take my hand,” leading to some perfect fangirl and Snapchat moments. After performing their dance hit “Forever”, they busted out their new single “Something About You”, and it would be one of a few tracks performed from their upcoming album. And the fans sang along, clearly and loudly to every single song performed in the 40-minute set. But the duo’s talent really shined when Jordan sat with a guitar and they performed their early single “Chill Pad Deluxe”. Closing their set with “Learn from Each Other”, there was nothing but positive comments as fans spoke of the impressive show and squished their way out of the steamy hot venue.

Although it was a brief live show, Jordan threw a DJ set afterwards, as Majid took the time to meet fans and pose for photos. Considering the success and the direction these Torontonians are taking, this might have been the last time to be up-close-and-personal with the guys. And yes, this is the Majid Jordan featured on and co-producers of Drake’s 2013 global banger “Hold on We’re Going Home”. But it’s almost 2016, and Majid Jordan are – and continue to be – much bigger than just a feature.
