Your favourite East Vancouver neighbourhood is cranking up the party this weekend, and they want you to join.
The inaugural Commercial Drive Street Party will take over the Drive this Friday, May 1 in connection with the anti-capitalist MayDay, or International Worker’s Day. The party will start at 6 p.m. at Grandview Park with The Caretakers, then from 7 to 9 p.m. will include a folk show and free barbeque.
At 9 p.m., the event will take to the streets and fill Commercial Drive with a number of DJs playing everything from house, trap and EDM to hip hop.
As for the event’s purpose, the Vancouver Mayday event organizers say the party is “the 4th straight anti-capitalist, anti-authoritative party to celebrate this city’s grassroots resistance to gentrification, capitalism, and pipelines!”
“As we reclaim space on Commercial Drive, we are standing in solidarity with the indigenous land defenders resisting LNG pipelines on their own territory and the Burnaby Mountain caretakers resisting Kinder Morgan. In the face of increasing criminalization of radicals (Bill C-51, the anti-mask bill, etc), solidarity with all those fighting for self-determination is more important than ever.”
