Dec 19 2017, 4:03 pm

Two weeks ago, Vancity Buzz called upon its LGBTQ readers to submit their own ‘coming out’ stories as a means of empowering and inspiring others who may be struggling with their own sexuality. Seven courageous individuals submitted their own personal stories to us – here’s a full compilation.

Cory Ashworth from 102.7 The Peak

Age: 35
Occupation: Broadcaster, 102.7 The Peak

At 15, being called Fagboy on the football field happened. Ironically enough, it was a straight kid with immaculate gaydar who gave me that name in high school. I was thankful that the moniker never lasted more than that year, but those words ‘Fagboy’ have stuck with me ever since… Read on.

Joey Laguio

Age: 20
Occupation: QA Analyst Co-op / Computer Engineering Student

Words just can’t express how excited I am for the future… For the first time in my life, I am becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of allowing other people to get to know me. But not just know me – I mean – really get to know me, you know? Without a fake mask or a front that I put up. I’m talking about the real me… Read on.

Cameron Staff

Age: 20
Occupation: Journalism Student

I always knew I was gay. I think the first time I was truly attracted to a guy was in grade 6, I was 11. All through high school I was friends with girls. Every single one of my close friends were girls. It is who I felt comfortable with, who I got along with. I was always around guys, but tended to avoid them in social situations, not making eye contact… Read on.

Michael

Age: 25
Occupation: Manager at UBC (and a teacher by trade)

What a year it has been… to say the least. My coming out story story probably isn’t overly unique, but it is MY story nonetheless – and one that I am particularly proud. Having grown up in very small, rural community in south-western New Brunswick, being openly gay isn’t very common… Read on.

Ariel

Age: 21
Occupation: Receptionist

I guess it began when I was 11 years old, when I first laid eyes on the local delivery driver; it was love at first sight. My friends and I used to ride our bikes or walk to get slurpees, and somehow she always drove past us. When she did, it felt as if time was moving in slow motion, I stopped everything I was doing to just watch her as she drove past. I was mesmerized; I felt butterflies in my stomach… Read on.

Spencer Toth

Age: 22
Occupation: SFU Student

On the surface, I might seem like your average 22 year old university student with endless ambition and a serious love for music. But it took me a long time to get to the point I’m at today, as an outgoing and openly gay man who is comfortable in my own skin… Read on.

Cheyenne

Age: 21
Occupation: Makeup Artist

My name is Cheyenne, I am 21 years old. I’m a makeup artist, I moved from Saskatchewan. I identify as “pansexual” and I just started to identify as pansexual a few months ago. I was confused if I was straight or gay, but I realized it wasn’t their “body parts” I preferred, as cheesy as it sounds, it was who they were, what kind of person someone is, is what I find attractive and not what’s down there… Read on.
