Where to get coffee at SFU

Dec 20 2017, 1:16 am

Chain emails, novelty t-shirts, and countless internet memes all agree: you just can’t function without coffee. So when you’re neck deep in peer evaluations, your project partner hasn’t sent you their half of the work, and your dormmate has been watching the Golden Girls at full volume for that last five hours, having a steaming hot cup of liquid sleep deprivation can be the decider between life or death.

Here are the best places to get coffee at SFU, and get a taste of that sweet, sweet Capital C.

If you’re looking for a late night spot, this is as late night as it gets. Open 24 hours a day, the Dining Hall has coffee, tea, and a bunch of other things to occupy your food hole, as you cram that next exam, or in between binge viewings of Gossip Girl.

Location: Near Residence Tower B

Mackenzie Cafe is one of those spots that doesn’t need to be overthought: it has coffee, the coffee is good, the coffee is cheap, you should go here. It’s pretty central on campus, too, so it’s really a no-lose scenario.

Location: In the Strand Hall side of the Academic Quadrangle

Higher Grounds Coffee

If you’re in the Food Court, and hankering for a hot cup of coffee to wash down that breakfast poutine/lunch poutine/dinner poutine, then Higher Grounds is the place for you. They’ve got a good selection of baked goods, as well as smoothies, iced drinks, and sandwiches, as well.

Location: The SFSS Food Court in the Maggie Benston Centre

Tim Hortons

Let’s just lay this out right now: it’s a Tim Hortons. You know exactly what you’re going to get here. Double Double? Sure. Questionable chicken soup? You betcha. Attitude from a 15-year-old? Inevitable. But there’s something comforting – almost homey – about Tim Hortons that can’t be denied.

Location: The West Centre Mall near the Lorne Davis Complex

Starbucks

Starbucks can’t be avoided, and it’s no different at SFU. It’s in a prime location, right on your way in to or out of campus, so if you haven’t had your breakfast frappuccino, this is the best spot to get it. They’re also open relatively late for a coffee place, so it’s as good as any for studying or Clash of Clans. People are still playing that, right?
