Clearly Canadian is making its comeback. Thanks to a powerful flood of online backers, the fruit-flavoured water in the familiar teardrop bottle is in production and headed to our stores (and mouths) soon.
If you remember the late 80s and early 90s you probably remember Clearly Canadian. The drink, made with Canadian spring water and natural flavourings, was at the forefront of the “New Age” beverage movement, and was extremely popular, even inspiring off-shoot brands and flavours (anyone remember Orbitz, with those weird little balls floating around?).
Clearly Canadian went out of production in 2009, but a movement hit the web in 2013 to get the drink back onto store shelves. With just a couple of days left in an Indiegogo funding campaign, Clearly Canadian has raised over USD $123,000, more than doubling their goal of $50,000.
The beverage will be made in four flavours (Country Raspberry, Orchard Peach, Wild Cherry and Mountain Blackberry), but there may still be a wait before we all can have our hands on some. The campaign is tracking regional support, and will focus distribution accordingly; currently the Great West region, which includes British Columbia and western U.S. states, ranks fourth.
“Since distributing through local retailers will take time, there’s no guarantee that we’ll be in stores near you any time soon,” explains the campaign site. A $30 pledge gets you one case of the drink, delivered to you. Clearly Canadian is urging that level of support, and also that fans ask their local grocers to stock the beverage.
As a bonus, if the campaign hits $250,000, it will “unlock” a fifth flavour: Summer Strawberry. Sadly, Clearly Canadian says they have “no plans to bring back any other flavours in the future,” so it’s this or just the base four.
