The annual CKNW Orphans’ Fund Pledge Day on December 6, 2013 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, created with the goal to raise funds for children with special needs, raised a record-breaking $1,928,378 in donations from a very generous public, including a surprise $25,000 donation from Canadian vocalist Michael Buble who called in his donation from Argentina.

This annual day of giving, broadcast live on CKNW AM980, a division of Corus Entertainment, was hosted by station personalities and featured community leaders including Canadian vocalists Michael Buble and Dan Mangan, Vancouver Canucks Alumni Cliff Ronning, Kirk McLean and Pat Quinn, Vancouver Police Department Chief Jim Chu and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.

Also among the guests, were celebrities and politicians, joining together to make the day a huge success.

President of the Vancouver Giants hockey team and CKNW Orphans’ Fund Board Chair Ron Toigo, says “It is a privilege for me to be involved with an organization with such heart. For over 60 years, the CKNW Orphans’ Fund has had the opportunity to brighten children’s lives in BC and we are thrilled about the support that British Columbians provided on Pledge Day. The donations will give us the ability to fund children that need it the most in this province”.

Among Vancouver’s warmest and most durable children’s charities, CKNW Orphans’ Fund made a decision to devote most of a broadcast day to allow listeners to publicly express the compassion and generosity they had always shown.

This process began during the early 1970s on the station’s talk shows but grew into the public “Pledge Day” format by 1977. The CKNW Orphans’ Fund is dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of children with challenges.
