A driver was seriously injured in a crash involving an RCMP officer in Surrey Tuesday afternoon.

The officer was driving an unmarked police vehicle and got into a crash with two other cars around 1:30 pm near 100 Avenue and 148 Street, according to the Independent Investigations Office of BC.

The officer and one driver were treated for minor injuries by paramedics. The driver of the third car was transported to hospital with more serious wounds.

The police watchdog is investigating the crash, as it looks into all instances where someone is seriously injured or killed in an incident involving police in BC.

The officer involved is part of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team. The IIO did not say what incident the officer was responding to.

The intersection is still closed while the IIO investigates. Anyone with dashcam footage of what happened is asked to get in touch with them.
