Tides Canada named CityStudio Vancouver among its Tides Top 10 – a national annual award honouring some of Canada’s most innovative social change efforts that inspire people to take action, think new ways and make the world a better place.

CityStudio was chosen for engaging students in collaboration and dialogue with mentors and municipal staff to develop and implement urban sustainability projects.

“Our Tides Top 10 award is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on some of Canada’s most innovative social and environmental initiatives,” said Ross McMillan, President and CEO of Tides Canada. “Each of this year’s recipients has demonstrated innovation, creativity and impact while working at the intersection of social, ecological and economic considerations. We’re pleased to recognize and celebrate their collective dedication to social change.”

“We are proud to be contributing to the great work that Tides is doing across Canada,” said Janet Moore, Co-Director at CityStudio. “We are looking forward to engaging with other cities across Canada to learn more about the CityStudio model,” said Duane Elverum, Co-Director at CityStudio. “This work would not be possible without the deep, inspired commitment of Mayor, councillors and staff at the City of Vancouver, Vancouver Foundation, Vancity, Simon Fraser University Semester In Dialogue.”

CityStudio’s unique program brings together students from six post-secondary institutions (SFU, UBC, Emily Carr, Langara, BCIT and VCC) and City of Vancouver staff to co-create projects that work towards the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, the Healthy City Strategy and the work of the Engaged City Task Force.

Since 2011, CityStudio has created 60 projects on the ground in Vancouver communities, involved 1,700 students working with 33 City of Vancouver staff and 87 community guests. During this time the project has contributed more than 50,000 hours of faculty and student research, learning and action towards the City of Vancouver’s initiatives.

Tides Canada is the country’s largest public foundation dedicated to the environment and social justice – a network that connects an ecosystem of donors and doers who care about our people, our environment and our future.
