Over 2,000 employees laid off by City of Surrey

The City of Surrey been forced to lay off over 2,000 employees as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oliver Lum, communications manager for the City, tells Daily Hive that the layoffs include staff in Parks, Recreation, and Culture, and the Surrey Libraries.

The city’s recreation centres, libraries, civic ice rinks, cultural facilities, museums, and public pools have been closed since March 16.

An estimated 2,040 employees were temporarily laid off, including 140 full-time staff and approximately 1,900 part-time or auxiliary staff.

“The City of Surrey is providing 28 days of pay continuity for part-time and auxiliary staff and 42 days of pay continuity for regular staff,” Lum said.

On Thursday afternoon, the City of Vancouver confirmed with Daily Hive that they had laid off 1,500 employees to date, specifically employees who operate community centres, civic theatres, and the Vancouver Public Library.
