To respond to the unprecedented demand to watch Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, Cineplex has announced that it will add 160 screenings at 115 theatres across Canada for opening weekend.

This represents a third block of passes and an increase of 50 per cent in the number of screens that will show the much-anticipated blockbuster.

The theatre chain expects hundreds of thousands of people will watch the movie at approximately 500 screens over the course of the opening weekend, which begins on Thursday, December 17 with a 20 hour marathon of back-to-back Star Wars movies at some locations including Scotiabank Theatre in downtown Vancouver. The marathon will conclude in the evening with the advance screening of the new film.

Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens opens on Friday, December 18. It is expected to outpace Jurassic World‘s box office haul of $1.669 billion, the third highest-grossing film of all time.
