The Vancouver Art Gallery is getting ready to host its first-ever fashion-focused exhibition.
The monumental presentation is dedicated to the art of fashion with the Canadian premiere of Guo Pei: Couture Beyond, which will be taking place at the Gallery from October 13, 2018 to January 20, 2019.
Guo Pei is China’s foremost couturière and the only Chinese national designer invited to join Paris’ prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.
Renowned for combining China’s rich aesthetic tradition with modern sensibilities, the exhibition will showcase more than 40 of Guo Pei’s breathtaking designs, including opulent avant-garde silhouettes.
This includes the mesmerizing imperial yellow cape made from fifty-five pounds of embroidered silk with a five-meter train. You might recall seeing Rihanna wearing this stunning dress at the Met Gala a couple of years ago!
Couture Beyond looks at the the evolution of Guo Pei’s designs over 10 years, beginning with examples from her early collections, Samsara (2006), An Amazing Journey in a Childhood Dream (2008) and 1002 Nights (2010), with a lively installation in the Gallery’s rotunda of the collection from her 2015 MAC Cosmetics collaboration.
The exhibition will also include a number of works from Guo Pei’s Legend of the Dragon (2012) collection, which animates the mythical dragon motif that figures prominently in the Chinese zodiac.
Before the exhibition opens, you have the unique opportunity to attend a lecture with Guo Pei on Tuesday, October 9. The event will be presented in English and Mandarin and will feature a conversation between the fashion icon and award-winning journalist Bronwyn Cosgrave.
You’ll get to hear first-hand how Guo Pei’s show-stopping, magnificent creations make her a modern messenger of her cultural heritage.
