Chinatown's Dumpling Cook-Off and Eating Contest Returns This Summer

Dec 19 2017, 7:10 pm

Back for a second year, Chinatown’s Golden Dumpling Cook-Off and Derby will take place at the Festival on Sunday, August 10, 2014.

Several of Vancouver’s favourite eateries will cook up dumplings alongside chefs from traditional Chinese restaurants, and a panel of expert judges will eat up the competition in order to determine who is at the top of the heap.

This year’s contenders for the illustrious Golden Dumpling trophy include defending champ Pidgin, along with Wildebeest, La Mezcaleria, Vij’s, Harvest Community Foods, Bambudda, Bestie, and more.

But the dumpling fun is not limited to the culinary pros. There’s room at the table for a few good eaters, too, in the Derby, which will pit eight men and eight women against each other in two gender-based heats to see who can gobble up the most dumplings in two minutes’ time. If you’re hungry for battle, you can register online for a chance to chow down.

If you’d prefer to eat at a more leisurely pace, you can purchase a “passport” to the event, which grants you a taste of every dumpling in the cook-off. Passports are $30 (plus Eventbrite fee) online ahead of the event; there will be a limited number of tickets at the door for $35.
