Man shot and killed in Chilliwack on Sunday identified by police

Sep 6 2017, 4:56 am

Police have identified the victim of “brazen shooting” in a residential Chilliwack neighbourhood over the Labour Day long weekend.

Just before 4:30 am on Sunday, RCMP were called to the 9500 block of Williams Street, in response to reports that a man had been shot.

The victim, 35-year-old Jose Martin Torres, was rushed to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Now, The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken control of the investigation and while they do believe the shooting was targeted, officials are still working to figure out an exact motive.

Torres was known to police, but so far, investigators are not linking his death to other incidents of gun violence around the Lower Mainland.

“This was a brazen shooting in a residential neighbourhood,” said IHIT spokesperson, Cpl. Frank Jang. “We urge anyone with information regarding this shooting to contact police.”

Anyone who may have information on the incident is asked to contact IHIT by phone  at 1-877- 551-IHIT (4448), or by email at [email protected].

Alternately, those who wish to remain anonymous, can call Crime Stoppers by phone at 1-800- 222-TIPS (8477), or leave a tip online at solvecrime.ca.
