Charity snowball fight at Robson Square this Saturday

Dec 19 2017, 10:26 pm

For one day only this spring, the heart of downtown Vancouver will be transformed into a winter-themed wonderland.

On Saturday, the Canadian Cancer Society is hosting its second annual Yukigassen: Snow Battle Vancouver tournament at Robson Square. As there is no snow in the mountains, the event will be using snow props used in Hollywood productions and fake snow.

The public is welcome to come down to the plaza and watch eight teams of seven participants throw snowballs at each other, win prizes and win the opportunity to represent Vancouver in the Yukigassen Canada National Championships.

Yukigassen is a Japanese-based snowball fighting competition played on a court with rules similar to capture the flag as players are eliminated when they are hit with a snowball. Players also wear special helmets, with protective face shields, and all the snowballs used in the fight are made prior to the match.

Proceeds from registration will go towards Canadian Cancer Society’s efforts to support lifesaving research and prevention programs for those facing cancer.

In addition to watching the teams battle it out in the snow, the public is invited to experience the winter-themed wonderland, carnival games, live entertainment and drop-in games.
